Course Impact Axis

A Pledge Before a Pitch

"We refused to launch a single course until we could answer one question honestly: will this change how someone works on Monday morning? That question became the foundation of everything we build."
— Founding team, Course Impact Axis, 2021

Before you read about our services, frameworks, or methods, we want you to understand what we stand for. This page is built around principles — not sales copy. If our beliefs resonate, the rest follows naturally.

Seven Principles That Shape Every Course We Build

I. Outcomes Over Content

We never start with what to teach. We start with what learners must be able to do. Content is a vehicle, not a destination.

"Redesigned our onboarding — task completion rose 41% in six weeks." — L&D Lead, Edinburgh fintech

II. Friction Is a Feature

Easy courses feel good but teach nothing. We design deliberate difficulty — retrieval practice, spaced challenges, productive struggle — because lasting learning requires effort.

III. No Vanity Metrics

Completion rates and satisfaction scores are comforting lies. We measure behaviour change, knowledge retention at 30 and 90 days, and on-the-job application.

We track 90-day retention as a default deliverable.

IV. Respect the Learner's Time

Every minute in a course is a minute away from someone's work, family, or rest. We earn that time by removing filler, redundancy, and performative content.

V. Context Before Curriculum

A course for nurses is not a course for engineers with different clip art. We immerse in the learner's real environment before writing a single objective.

VI. The Instructor Is Not the Star

The learner is. Our facilitation guides, scripts, and materials are designed to make the instructor a catalyst — not a performer.

VII. Build to Be Replaced

The best course we can create is one your team can eventually maintain, update, and evolve without us. We transfer capability, not dependency.

"They handed us a living system, not a static file." — Programme Director, Glasgow NHS trust

The Curriculum Spine — What We Actually Build

Phase What Happens Your Role Tangible Output
Discovery We interview stakeholders, observe workflows, and audit existing materials. No assumptions. Grant access to 3–5 subject-matter experts and real work samples. Context Map & Learning Gap Analysis (12–18 page document)
Architecture We design the learning structure: objectives, sequence, assessment strategy, and media plan. Review and approve the blueprint. Challenge our assumptions. Course Blueprint with assessment rubrics and facilitator notes
Prototyping We build one complete module — content, activities, assessments — and test it with real learners. Recruit 6–10 pilot learners from your organisation. Tested Module One + Pilot Feedback Report
Full Build Remaining modules developed iteratively, each reviewed before the next begins. Bi-weekly review sessions (45 min each). Complete course package: content, facilitator guide, learner workbook, digital assets
Transfer We train your facilitators, document maintenance procedures, and hand over all source files. Designate an internal course owner. Facilitator training session + Maintenance Handbook
Collaborative course design session in a modern learning studio

We Don't Sell Courses. We Build Learning Systems.

A course is a moment. A learning system is an infrastructure. We design for the long arc — from first exposure to confident mastery to independent evolution.

Every engagement includes a 90-day post-launch check-in at no additional cost.

The Learner's Journey We Design For

Awareness
What don't I know?
Structured Practice
Guided doing, not watching
Productive Failure
Safe mistakes, real feedback
Application
Transfer to real work
Reflection & Ownership
The learner becomes the teacher

Is This a Good Fit? An Honest Check

We are not the right partner for every project. Here is how to tell if we align:

We are a strong fit if you:

  • Need a course that changes behaviour, not just delivers information
  • Have access to subject-matter experts willing to participate in discovery
  • Value evidence-based design over flashy production
  • Want your internal team to own and maintain the course long-term
  • Are willing to pilot and iterate before full rollout

We are not the best fit if you:

  • Need a course built in under two weeks with no discovery phase
  • Want a slide deck recorded as video and called "e-learning"
  • Measure success only by completion certificates issued
  • Prefer vendor lock-in over capability transfer

A note on pricing: We scope every project individually after discovery. There are no catalogue prices because no two learning challenges are identical.

Typical engagements range from single-module redesigns (2–4 weeks) to full programme builds (3–6 months). We will give you a fixed quote before any work begins.

Phone consultations are always free and carry no obligation.

A Note on Evidence

We ground our practice in peer-reviewed learning science: spaced retrieval (Roediger & Karpicke), desirable difficulties (Bjork), constructive alignment (Biggs), and situated cognition (Brown, Collins & Duguid). We do not follow trends. We follow evidence.

This means our courses sometimes look less polished than competitors' offerings. We invest in activity design and assessment architecture — the invisible scaffolding that makes learning stick — rather than cinematic video and decorative motion graphics.

"Three months after the course ended, our team still references the decision frameworks daily. That has never happened with any training we have purchased before." — Operations Manager, Aberdeen energy services firm

If that resonates, we should talk.
